Internet Focused Firms Reign Venture Backed Businesses

The Wall Street Journal divulged its second annual list of the top 50 venture backed companies.  The list consists of companies that are worth less than $1 billion, allowing smaller businesses consideration.  Not surprisingly, this year Internet focused companies dominated the list.

Number one on the list is Castlight Health Inc.  This health-care technology company provides comparisons of out-of-pocket medical expenses (last year the business ranked No. 14.)  Number two, Xirrus Inc., is a Wi-Fi technology supplier.  Third place goes to Xactly, a provider of sales compensation tools. Other companies on the list to watch out for include Zoosk, Glam Media Inc. and Etsy Inc.

Although every company on the list did not have business models directly focused on the Internet, most of them at least employ social networking and/or mobile technology. Take cues from these leading businesses about the importance of utilizing the Internet in every company.
