Missing the Small Print Can Cost You
We warned about common Internet scams that small businesses need to watch out for, but the Internet isn’t the only place to be cautious. Yellow Pages Marketing B.V. is accused of swindling millions of dollars from small businesses with a mere fax.
Yellow Pages Marketing B.V. allegedly contacted small businesses with faxes regarding “updates” for Yellow Page listings. Many recipients completed and returned the faxes, oblivious of the small print that committed them to paying $89 a month for an online listing. The FTC froze Yellow Pages Marketing B.V.’s assets after shocked companies received $1,068 bills along with late fees and threats of collection agencies. Currently the FTC is working to shutdown the company and refund victims of the scam.
Small business owners have enough on their minds without adding worries about scams, but the scary truth is crooks see small companies as an easy target. Watch out for small print, contracts you haven’t had checked by a lawyer, and promises that seem too good to be true. You and your employees work too hard to have your money stolen by criminals.
