Google Acquires Zagat

Google has been reaching out to small businesses this summer, including the introduction of AdWords Express.  Now Google has agreed to buy local restaurant review company Zagat to increase their local offerings.

Zagat is a well-established provider of restaurant, shopping and traveling tips.  Most people associate Zagat with the Zagat pocket-sized guides for more than 100 localities.

On Thursday Google’s blog post said that buying Zagat would be “a cornerstone of our local offering—delighting people with their impressive array of reviews, ratings and insights.”

Google has recently become a stronger presence for local businesses.  Google’s agreement to buy Zagat means that local restaurants, stores and tourist attractions will be even more affected by the search engine giant’s power.
