What Startups Survive?
Fears of failure often cause aspiring entrepreneurs to shy away from launching their dream business. It’s true that many startups don’t survive past a single year, but a recent Brookings Institution study reveals which startups have staying power.
Participants in the study started small businesses that have survived over five years. One question asked the participants why they started their company. The largest number of respondents, 35%, said they like the work/lifestyle. Other answers included that they were motivated by a good idea for a business/product, the desire to make more money, and the inability to find another job.
The study found several other interesting statistics. For instance 17.3% of respondents said that their startup offers a service or good not offered by any other company. Also 17.6% of participants have applied for a patent, and 24.9% plan to do so in the future.
Why do some startups survive while so many fail? The Brookings Institution revealed a little bit of insight into the mystery. Don’t let angst about failure hold you back from your small business ambitions!
