Many Small Businesses Not Hiring or Firing

Small businesses are cutting less jobs than they have in years, but continue to be wary of hiring new employees.  A recent study by the National Federation of Independent Businesses surveyed over 700 small businesses on how many employees they fired and hired in December.

According to the study small businesses cut .15% of jobs in the month of December, which is the lowest percentage of workers cut in four years!  On the other hand many small businesses were not adding jobs in December.  The reason for not hiring, one-third of respondents said, is a lack of qualified applicants.  So in summary, most small businesses’ workforces stayed stable last month.

Has the size of your workforce changed recently?  If your business hired or fired employees in December it is in the minority.  We are optimistic that small businesses will continue to cut fewer jobs and create more positions!
