Economic Mobility By State
The American dream tells us that with hard work anyone in this country can improve their life. However, a recent study conducted by Pew Charitable Trusts finds that this is easier in some states than in others.
The study found that the states with the most economic mobility are New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Utah, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Maryland.
Meanwhile in North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, Florida and Texas people are less likely to change social classes over their lifetime.
Information for the study came from the Census and Social Security Administration data. It studied people born between 1943 and 1958.
