Local Businesses More Popular than Walmart

Walmart is the dreaded nemesis of many small businesses in America.  For many mom and pop stores, Walmart is threat to their survival.  However, recent data shows that local businesses are more popular than Walmart in at least one way…Facebook.

Recently Walmart launched a marketing campaign focused developing fan pages for every store.  So far there are about 2,800 fan pages for local Walmart stores.

Small business owners may be happy to hear that most mom and pop store pages have a greater number of fans than the Walmart pages.    In a sample of almost 2,000 local businesses, about 22% have more than 1,000 fans.  On the other hand, less than 4% of the Walmart fan pages have more than 1,000 followers.

Walmart is a source of tough competition for local businesses around the country.  The mega store may draw millions of customers around the country to their locations, but it seems that people remain more loyal to their mom and pop stores.
