5 Ways to Conquer ProcrastinationWe all do it. We put things off until the last minute. Wherever there are humans, there is procrastination.

Oddly, the entrepreneurial spirit seems to be summed up in the phrase “Get it done.” So, how do entrepreneurs beat back the looming threat of procrastination? We have some ideas here.

1. Do it first thing in the morning.

Okay, this first one seems the very opposite of procrastination. You could have done it earlier, but you ended up putting it off. That’s not what I’m talking about here. What I’m saying is: when you roll out of bed or get into the office, this is the very first thing you do. Don’t check your messages, don’t check your email. The task you’ve been putting off is the first thing you do before the distractions of the day can start to pile up on you.

2. Establish a pattern

Is the task you want to complete something that needs to be done every day? Set a schedule that allows you to establish a pattern. Some writers write for an hour a day. To kick that off, pick a specific time each day where you set aside that hour. If will keep you honest and is habit forming. You’ll start to feel the routine of writing that hour (or walking, balancing the budget, going over messages, etc.)

3. Make sure you’re ready

If you’re missing something you need to accomplish a task, it often times turns into an excuse not to complete it. Before you even get started, have what you need in order to accomplish your goal. Also, it will help you to feel on top of everything that’s ahead if you’re prepared for what’s coming.

4. Make a checklist

Is there anything as satisfying as checking off a box on a checklist? It’s such a small reward, but the implications are huge. Make yourself a checklist each day. Don’t overfill it. If you’re looking for some advice on how to make the perfect to-do list, check out this post.

5. Eliminate distraction

If you’re a busy entrepreneur, there are a lot of things out there that will distract you. Everything’s fighting for your attention. These distractions can’t be avoided, but there are a few that are the work of your procrastinating mind. Whatever your usual methods of promoting your procrastination, whether it’s hanging out at the water cooler or taking too long to make your coffee, don’t get caught in the trap you only set yourself.
