Eileen has been using social media as part of her day-to-day work since 2004 when she worked at Microsoft. When she left Microsoft, she realized most clients didn’t know how to use social media. They either blocked out social media or dabbled without any clear strategy. The dabbling surprised her the most that some major brands wouldn’t have a plan when going forward. In many cases, social media was handed over to the younger crowd because they supposedly knew what to do, even if they had just started working. The only experience they needed was youth and, realistically, that experience wasn’t enough. The entire brand reputation was being handed over to people with no business experience.
A mistake on your social media can be transferred around the world in 7 seconds. The potential for a mistake to go viral is immense. Social media is available to the whole world. Six degrees of separation means only a few mouse clicks can connect you to any brand or person. Some tweets that you thought would never come back to haunt you can be researched by companies or reporters. You need to make sure you consider what you’re putting out into the world before you click update.
Don’t say anything online that you wouldn’t want to hear quoted back to you in a court of law.
